About AFRICA-MRS PDF Print E-mail

The African Materials Research Soceity was established in 2001 to

(i) facilitate effective partnership and collaborations among African Materials Scientists
and their counterparts outside Africa
(ii) support improvement of science education in Africa and
(iii) support the development of a virtual network of materials research activities in Africa.

This society is based on the creation of African regional network of materials research society and so presently we have West Africa-MRS, South Africa-MRS, East Africa-MRS and North Africa-MRS. The Central Africa-MRS is not yet in existence. It will soon be launched.

The mode of operation of the mother society is to rotate the office of the President of the society every 2 years between the existing regional-MRS which led to the office of the President coming to West Africa in 2000, South Africa in 2001, North Africa in 2003-2005 and East Africa in 2005 - 2007.

Therefore at the 4th International Conference of the Society held in Tanzania in 2007, it was unanimously agreed that A-MRS secretariat should now move to West Africa (precisely Nigeria) with Professor Adewoye (Director-General, National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Abuja) as the new president of the A-MRS for the next 2 years (2008 and 2009).

At the executive meetiing of the Society held at the Sheraton Hotel & Towers in Abuja on the 28th of August, 2008, the following programmes of event in terms of workshop and training to be held in different parts of Africa for the A-MRS were adopted;

(i) Nano-biomaterials and Technology (Egypt, February 2009)
(ii) Nanotechnology (South Africa, May, 2009)
(iii) 2nd African Summer School of Materials (Morocco, 1-15 July, 2009)
(iv) Nanoelectronics (Ethiopia, September, 2009)
(v) Foundry & Advanced Manufacturing Technology (Nigeria, November 2009)
(vi) 5th International Conference of A-MRS (Nigeria, November 2009)

These professional and scientific events are positive steps towards the technological upliftment of the continent and your support and experience is very vital to the society. Having recognized you and your organisation as major stakeholders in the task of developing the continent technologically, we appeal that you join hands with us to systematically change the face of the continent through this annual event.

You can click any of the events for information and financial implication of each event to help you in deciding your level of contribution to these events.

Thank you.

Professor. O.O. Adewoye (FAS)
